What is MRSA?
MSRA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is one of many strains of a bacterium called staph (Staphylococcus aureus) and is resistant to some of the antibiotics typically used to treat skin and soft tissue infections including methicillin and other penicillin type antibiotics such as amoxicillin and the cephalosporins. MRSA is highly prevalent in places where children come in close contact with one another like day care centers, playgrounds, locker rooms, classrooms, gymnasiums and sports facilities. Toddlers, children and teens are likely to experience skin-to-skin contact in these places and may share equipment that has not been properly cleaned. Staph infections like MRSA also spread via skin-to-skin contact when playing sports, like wrestling, football, baseball or lacrosse, or from surfaces in gyms and locker rooms like showers, benches and countertops.
Children always seem to have some form of injury. Caring for the minor cuts, scrapes, wounds, burns and bug bites that children sustain from being active is often a routine task for parents, teachers and coaches. While cuts and scrapes may happen frequently, it’s critical that they receive prompt and correct attention as they are potential entryways for infection. Using SAFESKIN when caring for a wound when it happens will help protect your children from dangerous staph infections like MRSA.
Did You Know?…
- According to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, skin diseases accounted for 56 percent of all infectious diseases in competitive sports from 1922 through 20053
- With more than 38 million children and teens participating in youth sports activities, it’s critical that parents, coaches and teachers practice proper wound care.
- In 2009, 71,900 children were hospitalized because of infections under the skin
- Centers for Disease Control estimates there are approximately 10,800 deaths in the United States each year caused by staph infections, of which 5,500 are linked to MRSA
- Skin and soft tissue infections represented 69.9 hospitalizations per 100,000 U.S. children per year from 1996-2006; the rate of CA-MRSA skin and soft tissue infections increased over this period from one in every 100,000 cases in 1996 to 25.5 cases per 100,000 cases in 20067

i end up at Walgeens several times a week, a gift card woul come in handy!
We usually just wash them off with water and use band-aids. I was not aware of the dangers of MRSA!
I did know about MRSA but not that kids were susceptible
For small cuts and scrapes, the majority of the time I use nothing. If it’s something a little worse I’ll use some raw honey and/or coconut oil and fresh aloe. I’d have to look more closely at all of the ingredients in the SAFESKING gel, but it doesn’t really sound like something I would use.
I use neosporin for cuts, scrapes and bumps. SAFESKING gel sounds very good, i’ll have to try it. I was not aware of the dangers of MRSA & kids
We use water, soap, alcohol, and a mixture of essence oils a friend made (that I have the recipe for) that we call “the blue stuff”. The gel sounds awesome if you have the money for it. Never thought specifically about MRSA, but I have a friend that used to be a nurse, and she’s always telling me how to avoid infection and such. Thanks for the awesome giveaway!
I have used Neosporin the past and I always put bandages on the cuts. I have never used safeskin but when I was a young girl we used new skin on my finger from pitching cuts.
We use Neosporin and a bandage.
I had no idea till I read on Grinning Cheek to Cheeks Blog. I am really glad to know and will be purchasing the Safeskin. Thanks for the information.
I have been away of MRSA for few years now. I always make sure the little ones minimize exposure in situations that are high risk.
usually neosporin and band-aids. Really like safe skins – what a great idea!
we normally just use band aids this sounds like a nice alternative
I use this Avon hand cream that has an antibiotic in it. But now I want to try the SAFESKING gel. MRSA scares me so much. I think this is a great idea for kids and will keep them safe. Love that it is Non-greasy formula helps bandages to stay in place better. Thanks!
use antibiotical ointment if at all open
I used to use Neosporin. I would definitely use Safeskin and did not know that about MRSA.
This gel looks great! We usually use neosporin.
Entered the rafflecopter form as “crave to save”
Thanks for the chance to win!
gina.m.maddox (at) gmail (dot) com
Latex free is key!
I usually just use plain ol’ bandages.
For cuts I clean with soap and water, pat dry, apply neosporin, and cover with a bandaid. I’ve never tried SAFESKIN gel. It sounds like a good alternative to neosporin. I hate how greasy neosporin is.
I think it might be better than neosporin!
the bright colors that kids love, GOD BLESS AND KEEP YA’LL SAFE IN HIS LOVING ARMS.
I use neosporin and I didn’t know about MRSA! I think Safeskin would be GREAT!
We usually use neosporine. I do knw about mrsa. i think this is a great product and would love to give it a try .thanks
I usually use Neosporin for cuts and scrapes. I LOVE the bright fun colors of the Safeskin. I think that keeping my kids immunity up will help fight MRSA.
Usually Neosporen & bandaids, or Nuskin 🙂
i USE NEOSPORIN FOR CUTS & SCRAPES. I ALSO LIKE THAT ITS LATEX FREE .
I would usually use Neosporin. I had no idea about Safeskin, but I would try it.
I usually use soap and water…but this sounds good.
I use soapy hot water to cleam cuts, scrapes and bumps and have for 50 years. SAFESKIN gel is something I have been meaning to stock because of its convenience and how it seals off the owie. I am aware of the dangers of MRSA & ANYONE and the need for proper wound care. We are healthy and able to fight off infection so MRSA is not a concern.

I use neosporine
I like that It comes in four bright colors
For cuts and scrapes, we use neosporin and band aids.
I usually use neosporin f=for scrapes. I hadn’t heard of this product before, and mrsa scares me immensly
I usually put some Neosporin on cuts and cover with a Band-Aid. I think I would love the Safeskin product. I know of MRSA, but had no idea it was so prevalent in the public. I thought it was mostly found in hospitals and nursing homes.
i currently use neosporin, but I would love to try safe skin next time my kids get hurt
I’m a postal worker, so I get a LOT of paper cuts at work. When I get home with a few paper cuts, I dab on a little Bacitracin. It takes away the pain as well as healing the cut. Plus it moisturizes dry hands a little bit too.
I usually don’t use anything for cuts, scrapes and bumps. SAFESKIN gel looks like it would be more effective than other things like Neosporin (which I haven’t had much luck with in the past). I was aware of the dangers of MRSA & kids.
I use Neosporin at home. I like that its non-greasy formula helps bandages to stay in place better.
MRSA is nasty stuff! My mom had an infection on her arm for nearly a year and it took quite a few rounds of antibiotics and creams to get rid of it.
I usually use some generic antibiotic ointment, and NO…I didn’t now much about MRSA
I always use band aids on the kids but I will definitely try this for extra added benefits. The kids are sports fiends and always banged up. UGH
I’ve never tried the safeskin before. Thanks for hosting!
I usually used typical peroxide or alcoholtotreat cuts on my kids , but I will really consider safeskin next time, it sounds reallt good
i usually use a band-aid and neosporin but i think this would work soooo much better 🙂
I like that it’s latex free
I use neosporin for cuts, scrapes, bumps etc. I was not familiar with SAFESKIN before this blog post, I am not sure that I would have tried it if I would not have read about it here. I was not aware of MRSA and kids. Very good information.
We just use bandaids.
I was NOT aware of the dangers of MSRA and I normally just slap a band aid on minor cuts just so my kid feels better!
I usually just wash a cut/scrape and put a band aid on it if necessary. As I’m sure most people are, I do worry about infection, etc, so this Safeskin is probably a good thing.
I usually just wash the area and use Neosporin and a bandage. I don’t worry too much about infection. Safeskin sounds like something I would try.
entered: best buy, dali, cheers, phelps and mouse
What do you usually use for cuts, scrapes and bumps? We wash the cut and scrape with soap and water and sometimes put neosporin on it and bandaid. Then we pray for the boo-boo.
What do you think of SAFESKIN gel? I REALLY think my kids would like it, I LOVE it and will have it.
Were you aware of the dangers of MRSA & kids? I was aware.
Being a nurse I am well aware of MRSA & kids. I usually use neosporin for minor cuts and scrapes. I do use safeskin at times too, depends on the cut.
we use latex free
I like that it is latex-free
I usually use Neosporin and have never heard of Safeskin before. Mersa really scares me. I’ll look into this product.
This sounds great! We currently use neosporin alot and I do worry about this MRSA. I’m so happy they have something like this to help so kids don’t pick this up. We have enough to worry about so anything to help keep them safe is a great product for me
We usually use regular bandaids, but this stuff sounds great!
We tend to use bacitracin on cuts and scrapes but this gel sounds great! MRSA is very scary and it is definitely something I would like to protect my kids and family from!
I usually use neosporin and band aids with my kids but I think SAFESKIN gel is a great idea to add to the medicine cabinet
I am definately aware of MRSA. Last October I suffered for over a month with a MRSA infection in my nose of all places. After 5 rounds of different antibiotics it finally cleared up. I teach elementary special needs kids and work very closly woth them. I have leared to wssh, wash, wash those hands of both myself and my students. I will definately look into the Safeskin product.
FB fan as Kathy Newsom Davis

What do you usually use for cuts, scrapes and bumps? Neosporin usually What do you think of SAFESKIN gel? It sounds like it would be a great product to use. Were you aware of the dangers of MRSA & kids? No I was not.

I was not aware of this product and with 2 boys using equipment at the gym, cuts are always a concern. I will definately buy this product.
We normally use Neosporin for cuts and scrapes, but Safeskin gel sounds like a great product! I was not aware of MRSA and how easily transferable it was – thanks for the informative post!
We use Neosporin. I like that Safeskin is latex free! No, I was not aware of the danger of MRSA.
I wish Safeskin gel had been invented sooner! When I was a kid, scrapes were treated with “Green soap” and iodine by the school nurses & playground attendants- sometimes it was more painful then the sores themselves.
We typically use Neosporin, but I think Safeskin is great too!
I usually rinse out the cut with an antiseptic wash and cover with a band aid. I would love to try SafeSkin for my kids and yes, I am aware that kids can get MRSA.
For cuts, scrapes and bumps we usually use bandaids, a little soap and water to clean it, and a bit of neosporin. I really wasn’t aware of the MRSA risks, the safeskin gel seems really great, and I would love to try it!
We just wash and ice.
I like the idea of Safeskin gel – great for promoting healing.
I’ve never heard of the dangers of MRSA and kids before – glad to know it now.
Thank you.
I use Neosporin, but have only recently heard of SafeSkin, so I will be adding that to my first aid kit. I was not aware of the dangers for kids and MRSA
I use neoprene, and of course a good rinse with water to clean it. I never heard of all the dangers but I’m glad I know now.
normally i use neosporin and bandaid for cuts, and arnica gel for bruises
I am aware of MRSA and it’s extremely scary. I try not to freak out when my daughters get a cut or scrap. I just clean it with spray as quickly as possible and cover it with a bandage. Thank you!!
use latex free bandages
MRSA definitely concerns me, SafeSkin is a great way to disinfect and protect without the burning and stinging of alcohol or peroxide
Thank you for hosting this giveaway

I wasn’t aware of MRSA until my grandson had it.
I love that their latex free and come in 4 bright colors! MRSA is very scary and I didn’t even know what MRSA was until now! It freaks me out and I’ll make sure I take steps to better my child’s health towards MRSA.

I am pregnant with our first child and this was a very informative blog post! Good to know and even better that your giving us a chance to win the girtcard!! Thanks!
I usually use Neosporin but I’d love to try this
Kids always enjoy bright colors!
What do you usually use for cuts, scrapes and bumps? We use peroxide to clean then neosporen to heal it.What do you think of SAFESKIN gel? I actually would love to try it with my family! Were you aware of the dangers of MRSA & kids? Yes! Hubby works in the pharmacy so we know how scary this can be with kids!
I havent tried Safeskin Gel yet, but I plan to try it. After reading about it, I realize that just rinsing and bandaging cuts may not be protection enough.
We use Nesporin and Band-Aids.
I usually use a triple antibiotic ointment for minor cuts and scrapes. Safeskin looks like a good alternative, as MRSA is becoming resistant to antibiotics. I knew MRSA was becoming a problem in places like hospitals, but I didn’t know it was so prevalent in schools and other places with many children, though that makes a lot of sense now that I think about it.
We usually just use band aids. I do like the idea.
Clean it with a soap and water and cover with an adhesive bandage
i normally put some peroxide on it.. safeskin looks like a great idea!
I knew MRSA was a staph virus but I didn’t know it caused so many deaths :*(
I had never heard of SAFESKIN gel, it sounds like an excellent product to have on hand.
One of my nieces has MRSA. Everyone seems to downplay it, even our pediatrician said it pales in comparison to other things and if that was the only issue our daughter could be facing, that was a good thing. Thanks for helping educate us on this issue!
for cuts and scrapes we usually just use neosporin, but safeskin looks like it’d be much smarter, i cant wait to try it!
I usually use an antibiotic ointment on scrapes and cuts.
usually i use aloe vera or band aids depending on how bad the cut is.

nannypanpan@gmail.com
I normally use antibiotic ointment and bandages. Safeskin looks fun to use, my son wouldn’t mind using them.
i usually use store brand antibacterial cream – but glad to hear of this. i wasn’t as aware of mrsa as i thought i was.
We usually use Neosprin. I like the fact that SAFESKIN gel can last up to 48 hours and the colors. I was not aware of MRSA and kids- thank you or the information.
I usually use neosporin and bandaids. Safeskin sounds like a great alternative!
Thank you for bringing attention to this. Such infections are horrifyingly fast and deadly.
and they come in colors, love anything with pretty colors.
I worry about infection but I often forget to use Neosporen!
Normally use soap and water with a band aid, neosporin is it’s more than a scrape.
Safeskin sounds good. I like things that are keeping my kids safer. My dh is a tattoo artist and part of his certifications is blood borne pathogens classes. He’s a real stickler(and I’m glad) for keeping any cut, scrape, tattoo as free from germs as possible. Staph infections live on your skin more often than not. Hand washing is a must!
disinfectant spray and band aids.i sounds like a great product.in a way since the cleveland browns have had problems with a staph infection of some sort
I really like it is latex free
i usually use neosporin and bandades…would love to try the better stuff-just cant afford it
tcogbill at live dot com
Latex Free. Thankyou, Ken
I usually use neosporin and I hadn’t heard of MRSA until recently
For cuts and scrapes, I wash, dose & cover.
We usually just go with cleaning small cuts and scrapes with soap and water and ignoring bruises. Haven’t thought much about MRSA.
I like that they are latex free, self adhesive, and have colors that the kids would like.
I have to use the waterproof bandaids with no color or dyes because im skin has such sensitive skin
What is done depends a great deal on the area covered and the severity of the wound. For really minor ones (mild scrape) wash it with soap & water, usually leave it open to the air. As severity increases, add something like Neosporin, Band-aids, etc. The use of SafeSkin would be extremely useful in many of these injuries, especially if they are near a joint.
usually neosporin. love this stuff, seems pretty neat. no I was not aware of the dangers 🙁
I know the dangers of MRSA as my son had it a few years ago. He had a MRSA infection on his leg the size of a baseball which had to be cut out and left a big hole in his leg that took months to heal. He never knew how he got it but worked out of town for his job and had to stay in motel rooms, so we believe that he may have gotten it from linens in the room not being clean enough. He was warned to not let my grandkids use any towels and other linens that he used because they could als0 get the infection. Thankfully, none of the kids got it and my son has been okay since.
we use neosporin for everything
safeskin sounds great
I wish I had known about this gel back in the day. I was in the hospital for months with MRSA and almost died thanks to a botched surgery!
i love safeskin.. we use it for everything:) works great
safeskin is ALL I use for my kids scrapes and cuts. The colors are fun and the kids tend to let me know much sooner when it happens!
I like that it is latex free
I use a alcohol wipe and bandaids.
I’ve never used safe skin gel..but willing to try…I use neosporin. I aware of MRSA
I just use a bandaid.
