What I Wore On the Red Carpet | Sonsi Woman and Eliza Parker #DisneyOzEvent

Back in January I wrote a post asking for help choosing my red carpet dress. I had narrowed down my choices to these four dresses.

I read everyone’s comments, but went with my gut. I chose the green dress mainly because of its color (emerald green for the Emerald City). The dress arrived and fit like a glove. There was a problem, though. When choosing that dress, I knew that the belt was “not me”. I was going to try to wear the dress either without the belt, or with another belt. I first tried the dress on with the belt. To be honest, I felt like it was more fitting for the Brave red carpet than Oz. The other issue while wearing the belt… it seems my chest wall is much smaller than the rest of me. Sideways I looked like Dolly Parton… seriously. It wasn’t flattering in the least. Without the belt wasn’t flattering on me as well. I knew that if I took it in for alterations I might be able to make it work, but I was hoping for a dress that I would love right “off the rack”.

Fortunately Sonsi was super easy to work with and allowed me to exchange that dress for another. I loved the look of the red Sevilla Gown by Eliza Parker, but I wasn’t confident I could pull off red. Because of my lack of time (and confidence) I went with a color I knew would work for me. Black.

The Sevilla Gown by Eliza Parker arrived quickly and fit just as I had expected with a little extra length I hadn’t planned for (fortunately I had a pair of heels that would work to fix that). It was of a significant weight and felt (and looked) high quality. I knew I wouldn’t feel out of place or underdressed wearing this gown on the red carpet. The folks at Sonsi also surprised me with a black clutch and an assortment of jewelry to complete the look. I was ready to head to LA!

Getting ready for the red carpet was a process. I had all kinds of worries… like my hair keeping a curl, my makeup not looking like a street walker (or like someone punched me in the eyes) and hoping my undergarment would smooth out my extra curves that I would prefer to keep hidden.

I was actually surprised at how smoothly getting ready went for me. My previous experience getting ready for the red carpet in New York wasn’t as pleasant (let’s just say I was so frustrated I was almost in tears… not great for the makeup huh?). I had a few extra minutes to spare so I took some pictures for Instagram and Facebook while I checked out my final look.

All 25 of us met and the photo sessions began. Because of my ability (or let’s say non-ability) to carry my Nikon, we used each other’s phones for photos and hoped for the best. Here you can see my gown and clutch. I loved how I felt in this gown. It was super flattering, was flowing without dragging and looked great with the added sash as a belt that I snagged from my last red carpet gown.

Of course we had to pose for photos on the beautiful terrace of the The Langham, Huntington Hotel & Spa in Pasadena.

The Eliza Parker gown was comfortable to move around in as we climbed into our transportation, crawled out and walked Hollywood Blvd., and the most important part… as we walked the red yellow carpet. I loved how I didn’t feel like I had to keep checking for wardrobe malfunctions which left me feeling confident and pretty. You can read about my red carpet experience here.

I will be updating later on my thoughts about the movie, but I have to say my experience with Sonsi… from my selection, to exchanging, from their communication to the quality of items they offer was beyond stellar.  As a plus sized woman wanting to dress up (even to be red carpet ready!) while feeling appropriate but also feeling comfortable, pretty and fashionable… I would highly recommend shopping at Sonsi.
