Weekly Weigh In : Nutrisystem Day 1 #NSNation

New NS Logo

So…. Today is the day! Today is going to be my first day on Nutrisystem. I have to admit, I am a little nervous. I mean, heck… I have over 700 people reading about my weight loss story! But, I can do this. I am not the only woman (or man for that matter!) here that has a story like this and I am positive that even if you don’t have a similar story, you will still support me!

I’ll give a little history here. I have been overweight/chubby my entire life. I’ve been on one diet or another off and on for most of my life. I remember diets clear back to the age of 10. The carrot diet (yes, I ate mostly carrots), WW, cabbage soup diet, diet pills, SB diet, Atkins, Deal a Meal…. any of those sound familiar? I’ve done them all… and then some. This has caused me to yo-yo… losing 10, gaining back 15. You get the picture.

So here I am at the ripe ‘ole age of 40 and needing to drop 75-100 pounds. I always remember my mom saying to me “Do it now… the older you get the harder it is to lose!”. Heck, I was a kid…. did I listen? Nope! I have had 5 full term babies and the damage has been done and I am realizing that this may not be so easy.

I have another issue in my life that has made it difficult to lose and keep weight off. Back in 1995 I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). Basically, my hormones are off. Eggs mature but then don’t release… thus creating cysts. I am also insulin resistant. What does that mean? Well… my body has to produce more insulin than the normal person to break down starchy/sugary foods. These foods have been on my no-no list for so long I can’t remember when they weren’t. Does that keep me from them? To be honest… nope.

That is why I am excited about Nutrisystem. After a little research I found this video clip that explains the principals the diet is based on. It is called the GI (Glycemic Index). The Glycemic Index is a scale to measure how much carbohydrates effect a person’s blood sugar. The more stable you can keep your blood sugar levels, the better. If you can keep that stable it will aid in weight loss, controlling diabetes (insulin resistance is basically pre-diabetes) and it will also lower your cholesterol. Amazing huh? Watch this…

So, from here on out… Fridays are my “Weekly Weigh In” date. Will you visit me and cheer me on (please)? I have a wonderful support system with the counselors and dieticians at Nutrisystem…. but I also have two wonderful buddies doing this with me. Please visit Heather at Living on Love and Cents and Melissa at The Life of a Sippy Cup Mom and cheer them on as they embark on this journey with me!
