Mothers Day Gifts | My Mother Always Said
Mothers are always full of advice, right? Growing up I would always roll my eyes or say whatever when my mother shared her wisdom with me. I had the typical “It can’t/won’t happen to me” attitude most teenagers have.
As a tribute to my mom this Mothers Day I am going to share one of the best pieces of advice she ever gave me. I was around 13 when my parents marriage finally ended. My mom had worked odd jobs off and on during their marriage, but she had never finished college and now as a newly single mom she had to figure out how to make ends meet and hopefully not change her children’s lives too dramatically. She went back to college, put her nose to the grindstone and graduated summa cum laude from nursing college. An amazing feat, huh?
My goal in life had always been simple. I wanted to be a Mom. Period. I luckily met the man of my dreams in high school and we married just a couple of months after my high school graduation. My life was sweet and I could see my future clearly… as a mom.
So what was her advice to me as I finished my high school years?
Go to college…
GET YOUR DEGREE.
You never know what life is going to throw at you and you may someday need that degree to fall back on to support your children.
I saw how hard it was for my mom to start college later in life as a single mom with two children. This time I didn’t roll my eyes. I took her advice and went to college. In 1994 I graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education. I got my feet wet and taught 3rd grade for one year. I then fulfilled my lifelong dream and became a stay at home mom.
I am not a believer in divorce and I informed my husband before we said “I do” that when he uttered those words it meant until death do us part. He would have to die or kill me to be rid of me. We both agreed that divorce will never be an option for us. BUT… sometimes other things happen. I hope to never be put in that position, but I know that because I took my Mom’s advice I will have something to fall back on to support my children if I am.

It was good advice, too many people I knew in my early twenties lived with their parents too long and worked awful low paying jobs, not sure what they wanted to do beyond the weekend.

Nothing is worse then a marriage ending and you are unprepared to take care of your children. 🙂

My mother was not a big advice giver.. her opinion was people who need advice either won’t listen or don’t use it so she never offered advice really. If I asked her she would give me her opinion on a subject.
