iDeaPLAY Childrens Tablet
Sample received for review purposes. All opinions are my own.
As a parent of electronically savvy children, I have been on a mission to find a satisfactory substitution for my own tablets and phone for my kiddos. I was recently given the opportunity to try out the new iDeaPLAY tablet for kids. As you can see, out of the box it comes with the tablet, a charger, micro USB cable, USB dongle, a protective tablet cover/case and earbuds.
The product specs of the iDeaPLAY tablet include:
- runs on the Android 4.2 operating system with a dual core A20 1.2 GHZ CPCU Chipset
- 7” capacitive 800 x 480 display
- weighs .57 lb
- features a .3 MP front camera
- battery life of 4 hours
- Wifi: IEEE 802.11 b/g/n
- 1 GB DDR3 RAM
- 4 GB internal storage (expandable to 32 GB w/MicroSD card)
- 3 ports: USB, HDMI, MicroSD
- supports Flash 11.1
Power up is just like a regular tablet and I was greeted with a familiar looking screen.
The first thing I did was open the iDeaWelcome App that took me through the initial set up process.
After a quick age check (which is fabulous… just in case a little one got into it before mom/dad was able to set it up) I was able to set the time, time zone….
and connect to a wireless network. As you can see, the settings screen is very similar to the one you find on your Android cell phone or tablet.
The iDeaPLAY apps are purchased through the familiar Amazon appstore. To be honest I was a little frustrated that I had to repurchase some of Ethan’s favorite apps like Plants vs. Zombies as I had purchased them through the Google Play store earlier for my phone/tablet. I did a little research about side loading the Google Play Store and found that although it would download, getting it to function was futile.
So, the kids and I spent some time in the Amazon appstore downloading some of their favorite games and then I handed the iDeaPLAY off to Ethan to explore some of the preloaded apps as well as the new ones we just downloaded.
Ethan is very experienced and knows his way around my Galaxy Tab 3 very well. He took to the iDeaPLAY with ease and was happy as a lark.
The iDeaPLAY also comes loaded with parental controls that will allow you to decide which content your kids can view and which features can be accessed in Kids Mode.
Kids Mode is harnessed through Famigo.

I’m going to be honest and tell you that my kids used Famigo once and informed me they were too big for it. At 5 & 7 both Emma and Ethan are Android experts. It frustrated them to be confined in an app as they prefer to be able to check out the appstore and bounce around on the home screen. That being said, I could totally see using Famigo with a 2, 3, and even 4 year old. Younger children are experts are causing havok on tablets and phones because they just press things willy nilly.
We also ran into a snag a week in with our tablet. For some odd reason it got stuck in a bootup loop and just froze. iDeaPLAY was very responsive to my issue and after a few emails and photos they sent a new unit to our house. We have had it for several weeks now without a single bootup or freezing issue.
Another small issue we had was with the Netflix app. My kids love to watch their programming on tablets. It’s portable and personal and hiding under a blanket while watching Power Rangers just rocks. On both tablets I was able to download the Netflix app and log in. Everything seemed normal until we chose a show to watch. We could hear the show and see the slider moving, but the screen was blank. Moving the slider we could see screen shots of the show, but again letting go and letting the show continue to play we couldn’t see anything. I’m sure it was only a Netflix issue because we were able to play the preprogrammed videos with ease.
Overall, we would recommend this kids tablet for families with younger children. I can honestly say that adults would not want to pick this up and play around. Unfortunately to get to this fabulous price point a few cuts had to be made… specifically the resolution and the responsiveness to touch. That being said… my kids never once complained about either of those features.
Pros:

- sturdy and durable enough to survive rough use from children
- expandable through MicroSD card
- plenty of ports
- familiar Android platform
- parental controls if you want to use them (Famigo)
- preloaded with premium apps
- totally customizable
- 7” display is a decent size for the “littles” in your life
- preloaded with “SupportCare” app to diagnose issues
- the kids enjoyed it!
Cons:
- screen resolution is low
- touch screen can be touchy on occasion
- video wouldn’t play on Netflix
- stuck in the Amazon appstore
- low quality camera (.3 MP)
- doesn’t charge through MicroUSB

I like the whole idea of a tablet tailored to kids…especially the internet controls and the silicone bumper. My kids broke our Ipad screen and that was a costly expense!

I like that everything needs to be set up by an adult first, and that you have to approve payment of apps. Being an android is good also. Just thankful I have a special needs granddaughter that could use one of these (she is currently using a leapster 2 and needs to do more autism apps. This would help. Thank you for the giveaway.

I think this tablet looks excellent for kids! I like how it is an Android. I also LOVE how it’s waterproof and bump resistant, and even comes with a protective case. My kids are pretty good at dropping stuff, so having these features to save it from breaking is a huge bonus!
