Celebrate Earth Day by Recycling Old Cell Phones
This post is part of the Verizon Ambassador program #vzwbuzz. All opinions are my own.
Did you know that Earth Day was just around the corner?
Yep! April 22, 2015 our household will be participating by cleaning out our old electronics.
I bet if I were to ask you if you had any old smart/cell phones lying around… the answer would probably be yes.
So many of us replace or upgrade our phones and toss the old one into a drawer… often times forgetting about it.
I’m one of these individuals. Although it’s not the oldest phone in my drawer, this pink Razr does show just how far back my electronics stash goes.
Instead of cluttering up your drawers … consider donating!
Did you know that 130+ million Americans that toss their old phones into the trash each year? I would wage a guess that many of these phones are still functioning.
Please consider donating your functioning phones to a program like Hopeline.
By collecting no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories Verizon is turning them into support for domestic violence organizations nationwide.
Verizon also has a Device Recycling Program where you benefit! By turning in your old devices you can receive either receive a Verizon Wireless Virtual Gift Card or a credit applied to your Verizon Wireless Account if your device qualifies.
Did you know that by recycling a million phones approximately 75 pounds of gold, 772 pounds of silver and 35,274 pounds of copper would be reaped? It also would save energy and cut water and air pollution, including greenhouse gases.
Together we can make a difference.
Be honest… what is the oldest device you have in your drawer?
Will you be donating it this Earth Day?
My city is having an electronics recycling day tomorrow. I plan to take a few things.
I never thought to recycle our old cellphones but this is a really great idea.
I love Earth Day! Great time to do get the kids involved and teach them the importance of saving our Earth. I believe Recycle Bank online site has this apart of there program where you can send in old phone and electronics, and get points to redeem for stuff.
My device that I have in my drawer has to be over 5 years old! I need to recycle it and not throw it in the trash. Thanks for the information on how to recycle my old cell phone for Earth Day.
So smart. I have a few lying around in drawers that i didn’t know what to do with!
this is good information because I have a LOT of old phones to recycle !:)

This is a wonderful idea and a great way to incorporate a bit of environmental awareness into our lives. I would be willing to bet most people have at least one old cell phone lying around.
I would like to thank you for letting me know what to do with all those old cell phones. They are useless to me, and I would like to help out.
Thank for sharing, we have quite a few piled up. I didn’t know what to do with them. I will share this information with others.
