Growing up I remember my mom (and my grandma, too, for that matter) bracing our sliding glass door with a broom handle. My mom finally graduated to a charley bar, but my grandma lived with her broom handle the entire time she lived alone. I remember her grunting and struggling to bend down to take the broom handle out to open to door.
