Daylight Saving Time… whether you like it or not (I don’t… ugh) is drawing near. Soon it will be time to change our clocks… once again. On November 3, 2013 we will actually “gain” an hour and “fall back” (unless, of course, you have children that don’t care what the clock says).
It’s also that time of year when Energizer, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and fire departments nationwide join forces for the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery® program to raise awareness of the importance of working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in helping to keep families safe in their homes. This is the 26th year for the annual program and the message is still an important one.
Did you know, thirty-eight percent of fatal fire injuries occur in homes with no smoke alarms, while 24 percent occur in homes in which at least one smoke alarm is present but fails to operate, frequently due to dead or missing batteries.*

I learned that we should replace the batteries in our flashlight or lantern every few months if it isn’t used for extended periods of time. This insures that it has fresh, working batteries and prevents battery leakage.

I thought that learning how the battery works is really neat. I never gave it much thought but it is kind of neat to how it works.

Our family has a tiny piece of farmland where we sometimes camp, but with no water and no electricity, it can be boring for someone like me without the ability to get out and hike, fish, garden, etc. We’d like to have a generator for emergencies and maybe just to use for some “necessities” of life, and still be able to enjoy nature.

I think this campaign is really clever.Change your Clock, Change your Battery. I’ll admit I’m guilty of just waiting for my alarm to chirp at me to change the batteries when they are low.
I was stunned to see all of the many products they make… not just batteries.

I learned that you shouldn’t carry loose batteries in a pocket or purse with metal objects like coins, paper clips, etc. This can short-circuit the battery, leading to high heat or leakage.
I learned that you shouldn’t recharge a battery unless it is specifically marked “rechargeable.” Attempting to recharge a non-rechargeable (primary) battery could result in leakage or rupture
