Homemade Hummus Recipe | Super Bowl Anyone?
Hummus has been a staple in our household for several years now. I was very resistant, at first, to try it. I mean seriously… ground up chickpeas? But OH MY HEAVENS it can be SO GOOD with pretzels, carrots, celery… heck any vegetable or cracker really. I’ve been known to have hummus for breakfast with cucumbers. Yep. It’s an addiction.
There are many “good” store bought options available, but I wanted to find a recipe so that I knew just exactly what was in it. This is a fabulous “base” recipe to eat as is (as just garlic) or add in roasted red peppers, olives… basically any of your favorite hummus additions. It’s super easy to make, especially if you used canned chickpeas. We found it’s really not a huge deal to soak our beans overnight and boil them in the morning for an afternoon cooking session… and it makes the recipe even cheaper to make!
- We use organic where possible:
- 1 can garbanzo beans
- 1-4 cloves garlic, crushed (to taste)
- 1½ Tbsp tahini
- 4 Tbsp lemon juice (when using organic add a little at a time as it's a little stronger)
- ¼ cup water
- salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- Drain and rinse chickpeas. Put all ingredients in food processor and blend until smooth. Enjoy!
My husband loves Hummus I’ll deffiently have to try and make this one day thanks for sharing!
Thanks Tara! Please do come back and let me know how it turned out! I am hoping to get adventurous and add more than garlic in soon.
We LOVE hummus! I sometimes use it on sandwiches instead of mayo. In keeping with my plan to reduce the number of cans I use, I make and freeze beans, including garbnzos, in advance. It’s so easy and cheap. So to make this, I would take out about a 1 1/2 to 2 cups from the freezer.
Hi Mary Beth,
For freezer beans… do you just make them ahead and store them in usable sizes in the freezer? I would love to have them readily available.
I have never tried hummus, but I would love to. I knew the main ingredient was chickpeas, but I wasn’t sure about the rest. This recipe seems easy and I look forward to making it. Thank you for sharing this recipe!
I have never tried it before. I am willing to try anything once! Thanks for sharing. The recipe does sound good.
I love hummus. I think it’s mandatory for vegans. I always put in too much lemon juice. I’ll try this, and see if I don’t get it right this time!

Tahini is grown sesame seeds. I find mine at my local grocery store, HyVee. You can also find it at Health Food stores and Amazon! Good luck!

Clean eating doesn’t have to be “bad” tasting, but this sounds good. It’s good to incorporate healthier options to pig-outs.
This sounds delicious and looks easy to make. Can’t wait to try it out
