Walgreens and Express Scripts… How Will YOU Be Effected?

It’s easy to check. Flip over your prescription card. If it says Express Scripts, this information may be of importance to you. Still not sure? Check with your local Walgreens pharmacist and they can find out for you.
Walgreens and Express Script have been in negotiations for the past year over a new contract in regards to keeping Walgreens as part of their pharmacy provider network. Unfortunately, the negotiations were not successful and the contract has expired as of December 31, 2011. This effects all Walgreens pharmacies nationwide as well as Duane Reade pharmacies in the New York City area.
What does this mean for you?
Unfortunately, many loyal Walgreens pharmacy customers are having to find another pharmacy that can meet their needs. With Walgreens offering more 24-hour and drive-thru pharmacies than any other pharmacy in the country, this hunt may be difficult.
Walgreens is here for us to help make the disruption and inconvenience during this transition as minimal as possible. Their goal is to help patients continue to use Walgreens when possible, or take care of them if they need to use another pharmacy for their in-network coverage.
One way Walgreens is trying to make this as painless as possible is by offering a special discount on their annual membership for Walgreens Prescription Savings Club. During a special January promotion an individual can sign up for only $5, or $10 for a family membership. Regular individual pricing is $20 and $35 for a family plan. That’s a nice savings!
What are the benefits of this program? Once signed up you will receive savings on more than 8,000 brand name and all generic medications. There are more than 400 generics available with a three-month supply for less than $1 a week. Other benefits include discounts on flu shots, pet prescriptions, nebulizers and diabetic supplies. Plus you get bonuses when you purchase Walgreens brand products and photofinishing services.
