I just went for my yearly examine this week. As you may know, they measure your height at these appointments. I’ve noticed a slow trend happening that frightens me a bit.
I’m shrinking.
Getting shorter is a small fact of life. Gravity, compression… you know the drill.
But these shrinking numbers also set off an alarm for me. I am trying to avoid osteopenia and osteoporosis. If your body is not getting enough calcium it begins to take it from the bones, decreasing bone mineral density which can eventually lead to these diseases.
My focus lately has been to maintain healthy bones which means:
· Obtaining an adequate daily dose of calcium from my diet
· Regular bone strengthening exercises
· Supplementing when diet is not enough
I often worry about my daughter’s bone health. She has been a vegetarian for 7 years now and she also avoids most milk products. I know calcium is also found in other sources like almonds, oranges, spinach, broccoli and soybeans but for maximum absorption the calcium needs to be paired with vitamin D. I’m fairly certain she isn’t planning out her meals to pair her vitamins.
Some facts that recently made me take notice:
- If your body is not getting enough calcium it begins to take it from the bones, decreasing bone mineral density which can eventually lead to osteopenia and osteoporosis.
- Calcium also plays an important role in strengthening bones and teeth, as well as helping muscles (including the heart) and nerves function properly.
- The most worrisome fact is that females are born with lower bone density than men which creates a higher need for daily calcium intake; however, most women receive only half of their RDA calcium in their daily diets.
I’ve often stressed the importance of calcium to my daughter, but like most teens/young adults it’s gone in one ear and out the other. I honestly think that the huge horse pills I purchased for her are the main reason she didn’t continue to take calcium. They are just not a pleasant experience to swallow.
I was recently sent Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews to try as part of my morning vitamin regiment and to share with her. I liked knowing that Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews are the #1 doctor recommended calcium supplement chew so I gladly agreed.
I am a chocolate girl, so I tore that package open first. It was a pleasant experience to take my calcium by chewing Viactiv, which of course will encourage me to reach for them again the next day. This is what we want, right?
It takes just two Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews daily to provide 100% of the daily value of calcium for most women plus vitamins D3 & K. They are not intended to be your soul source, but are intended to help achieve recommended daily dietary levels of these nutrients as a supplement to diet/food sources.
I knew that getting my daughter to take them as well was going to be an easy task once she tasted them. Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews are available in delicious milk chocolate and caramel flavors. I think we both agree that chocolate is our favorite, though.
