I was one of the few people that insisted that all I needed to get somewhere was a map or a printout from Google maps to get me to my destination. Oftentimes I was stressed out because I misread my directions or lost my place and couldn’t get enough time to find my spot again before I had to look up and pay attention.

I happened to luck out on a fantastic clearance at a local store a couple of years back. That is when I purchased my first Tom Tom. I figured for the amount of money I just shelled out, it was worth a shot in the dark to see if this device could really reduce my stress and get me to my destination quicker (and safer).

I enjoyed that particular model, but it was a low end device that was missing several of the bells and whistles that I slowly realized I could really benefit from. I was sold, though, on the fact that I indeed did need a GPS to get me safely to unknown/unfamiliar addresses. Keeping my eyes on the road (safety), especially when my children are present, is a top priority for me.

After discussing my issues, Tom Tom was kind enough to send a VIA 1535 TM for our review. This particular model has just about every bell and whistle I could think of. I specifically loved the fact that it comes with lifetime maps. It was going to cost $75 just to update the maps on my (very) old model. The way roads move and are added around here I knew I was very out of date. I also adore the size of the screen. The 5” screen is perfect for seeing everything I need without squinting or leaning over.

After the initial plug in and map update I set the GPS up in my van and hit the road. We weren’t traveling far, but it was to an address I was unfamiliar with on a country road. Programming your travel destination is fairly simple and intuitive (you can see a bit of it in the video below). You can easily program frequently traveled to addresses in your favorites, set it to take you to the center of town or have it bring you to an exact address.

Once I hit the road I immediately noticed (and loved) that not only did the GPS tell me what street I am turning on to (with plenty of warning), but once on that road it told me how far I would be traveling before I needed to look for or expect a turn. My old GPS would only tell me to “turn right”… “turn right now”. Sometimes that was confusing and I would have to take my eyes off the road to make sure I turned right onto the correct street. I was pleased that the VIA 1535 TM made it so intuitive that I didn’t really need to look at it to know I was going the correct direction. When I did look at it, the ample screen size made all the graphics easily recognizable and a breeze to read.

My old GPS had such a small screen in comparison. The 5” screen on the VIA gives you a little bit of everything. You can view live action travel on the map, the speed limit and your speed, what direction you will be turning and how much further to the turn, what time it is now and what time it will be when you reach your destination. If you tap the bottom corner of the screen you can also easily adjust the volume for times like when you children start to drift off and the car is quieter.

Even with all this information, I’ve just skimmed the surface of why the Tom Tom VIA 1535 TM is a great investment. After years of using an entry level GPS, I have come to realize you get what you pay for. The extra “bells & whistles” will, in the end, save you time, energy, and frustration.

My favorite points of the Tom Tom VIA 1535 TM are:

    Thanks!!!! I learned they have an app for an iPod. We don’t have an iPod but my daughter wants one for Christmas. I am in desperate need of one of these TomToms. I just never seem to have the extra money to spend. If you knew how lost I can get, you would understand. Now, my dad is in a nursing home, and he has a 3cm mass in his brain. I am having to drive 1 & 1/2 hours to pick him up and drive him to numerous other appointments. This would come in extremely handy in my life right now.
